Endometriosis

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a painful and often debilitating condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This can cause severe pain and fertility issues.

Causes of Endometriosis

The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute, including:

  • Retrograde Menstruation:

    • Menstrual blood flows backward through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity instead of leaving the body.

  • Embryonic Cell Transformation:

    • Hormones such as estrogen may transform embryonic cells into endometrial-like cell implants during puberty.

  • Surgical Scars:

    • After surgeries like a hysterectomy or C-section, endometrial cells may attach to the surgical incision.

  • Immune System Disorders:

    • Problems with the immune system may make the body unable to recognize and destroy endometrial-like tissue growing outside the uterus.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Common symptoms include:

  • Severe menstrual cramps

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Pain during or after sex

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Infertility

Diagnosis of Endometriosis

At MMC IVF, we diagnose endometriosis through a combination of medical history, physical exams, and advanced diagnostic methods, including:

  • Pelvic Exam:

    • Checking for abnormalities such as cysts or scars behind the uterus.

  • Imaging Tests:

    • Ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans to identify endometrial implants.

  • Laparoscopy:

    • A minimally invasive surgical procedure to view the inside of the abdomen and confirm the presence of endometrial tissue.

Treatment Options for Endometriosis

Treating endometriosis requires a personalized approach based on the severity of the condition and the patient's fertility goals. Here are some options we offer:

  • Medications:

    • Pain relief medications

    • Hormonal therapies to reduce or eliminate menstruation

  • Surgical Interventions:

    • Laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial implants and scar tissue

    • Hysterectomy in severe cases

  • Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART):

    • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help achieve pregnancy
