In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process through which the egg and sperm are fertilised in a laboratory. Then, the fertilised egg is incubated or grown until it matures. Once it matures, it is transferred into the woman’s uterus for implantation.
Typically, IVF is recommended after trying lesser invasive fertility treatments. However, if the female partner’s age is above 40, the IVF is directly recommended to omit unnecessary delay in infertility treatment because higher age can reduce conception chances. It is also recommended when one of the partners has the following complications:
Endometriosis is a condition when tissues similar to the uterus lining grow outside the uterus. It impedes the uterus in natural conception.
Fallopian tube blockage is a major issue for which IVF is chosen. It is because the tubular blockage hinders the fertilisation or travelling of fertilised embryos in the uterus.
Many women face ovulation issues that fertility experts try to solve through fertility medications. An irregular ovulation cycle leads to inadequate and less egg production for fertilisation. Naturally, if the egg quality or number is poor, then there are lesser chances of conception. In IVF, the eggs are harvested manually and fertilised in the lab, and then the fertilised egg, called an embryo, is implanted back in the uterus. One IVF cycle takes 25 to 30 days to assure pregnancy.
Uterine fibroids are benign tumours that Interfere in the fertilization or implantation of eggs or embryos. Typically 30 to 40 years women face uterine fibroids issues.
Tubular ligation is the process in which the fallopian tubes are either cut or blocked to avoid fertilisation in the future. Therefore, if women want a baby after tubular litigation, IVF is the only way to conceive the baby and reverse tubular litigation.
If the sperms have poor concentration, are physically defective or have motility issues(unable to swim in the uterus and fertilise an egg), you will have to consult a fertility expert to help either resolve issues or recommend IVF.
Sometimes, thorough examinations fail to figure out infertility causes, thus called “unexplained infertility”. In such a case, other fertility treatments such as IUI or fertility medications may be futile, so the fertility expert may directly recommend IVF treatment.
If the couple does not want to pass any genetic disorder to the embryo, then IVF can be helpful. During IVF, before implantation of the embryo in the uterus, Pre-implantation Genetic Testing is done to check for any anomalies(an expected genetic disorder) in the embryo. If the embryo is found healthy and viable, it is transferred to the uterus for implantation.
When you decide to undergo an IVF Treatment at MMC IVF, Dubai, you can be assured that the IVF process will be clearly explained to you by experts in the field, and our staff will be by your side all through. The process starts with an expert making notes about your medical history. Preliminary checks like blood tests and ultrasound scans may be performed to understand hormone levels. Once we understand your situation, a tailor-made plan will guide us towards achieving positive results. In case male factor infertility is the issue, the expert may ask for a semen analysis, and the course of action will be altered accordingly. If the male factor is indeed a cause of infertility in your case, IVF-ICSI will be the way to go. This process takes about 21 – 25 days.
Here’s a step by step approach to IUI:
7 – 10 days When you are on Day 2 or maybe 3 of your menstrual cycle, you will be given medication that will help stimulate the growth of ovarian follicles. During this time, follicular monitoring will be conducted to check for this growth and development into eggs with the help of ultrasound, hormone levels will be checked through blood tests during this phase. In case an adjustment of medication is needed, it will be made. An HCG Trigger Shot will then be administered 36 – 40 hours before the process of Egg Retrieval to induce egg maturation at this stage.
You will be sedated for this, and eggs will be retrieved through a small surgical procedure that will be guided by ultrasound. Depending on how the body has reacted to the medication, many or a few eggs may be retrieved.
On the same day as egg retrieval, your partner will be asked for his semen sample. To make the process more effective, the process of ICSI will be carried out; wherein a single sperm will be injected into individual eggs that have been retrieved with the help of precision needles.
Pre-implantation Genetic Testing will be conducted to rule out the possibility of passing on a hereditary disease. In the case of gender selection, Comprehensive Chromosomal Screening will be undertaken. This process is conducted, about 4 to 5 days after the process of egg retrieval, wherein a biopsy is extracted from each embryo formed to be tested in the lab. Once we have a nod on healthy embryos, they will be transferred into the uterus for implantation.
A simple procedure that does not require you to be put under sedation. Once the embryos are successfully transferred into your uterus, the anticipation of implantation begins. Following the procedure, hormone levels will be tracked to check for a positive pregnancy result.
